Robert Faurisson
Background
ROFESSOR
ROBERT FAURISSON is often considered Europe's foremost Holocaust revisionist
scholar. Faurisson has described his family's and his own anti-German feelings
growing up during the Second World War in France. Faurisson was shocked
when he read of German historian
Martin Broszat's revelation, published in Die Zeit on August
19, 1960, that there were no gassings in Dachau, Buchenwald, or any of the
camps in Germany proper. He felt at once that he must explore this topic
further. He began writing to experts on both sides of the controversy including
the famous French revisionist Paul Rassinier.
(Robert Lenski, The Holocaust on Trial, p.281)
Faurisson places the date that he became "absolutely sure" that no
homicidal gas chambers were used by the Nazis as 1974. He credits himself
with being the first to point out that studies of German execution gas chambers
should begin with studies of American execution gas chambers. In 1977, Faurisson
began his research into this very area. Obtaining infromation from six American
penitentiaries: San Quentin, California; Jefferson City, Missouri; Sante
Fe, New Mexico; Raleigh, North Carolina; Baltimore, Maryland; and Florence,
Arizona, Faurisson concluded that only an expert in U.S. gas chamber technology
could determine whether the alleged German execution gas chambers were capable
of functioning as described in the Holocaust literature. (Faurisson, Introduction
to The Leuchter Report, p.7)
Faurisson felt that he had little chance of finding someone who was
both an expert in gas chamber technology and courageous enough to carry
out an investigation of the Auschwitz/Birkenau alleged gas chambers. Faurisson
found his specialist in Fred A. Leuchter Jr..
Leuchter went to Poland, conducted forensic examinations, wrote his now
famous,
The Leuchter Report: The First Forensic Examination of Auschwitz, and
testified in a court of law during the 1988 trial of
Ernst Zndel. (Faurisson, Introduction to
The Leuchter Report, p.8)
Faurisson felt that his ideas had been vindicated by Fred Leuchter's
analysis. By 1992, Faurisson was quick to point out that The Leuchter
Report was confirmed by three other reports: first that of the Krakow
Forensic Institute; then, that of Germar Rudolf, and finally that of
Walter Lftl. According
to Faurisson the most stunning of the four reports is the one from Krakow.
It had been arranged by the Auschwitz State Museum for the sole purpose
of disproving the results of The Leuchter Report. The opposite
happened and despite embarrassed explanations to try to minimize the meaning
of their own tests, the authors of the Krakow report confirmed - involuntarily
- that Fred Leuchter was right. (Faurisson, Foreward to Did Six Million
Really Die? p. v)
Faurisson, who has suffered numerous attacks and official censorship
for expressing his view on the gas chamber issue, has described the adventure
of Revisionism as follows:
Revisionism can correct history, but it will correct nothing of human
nature. On the other hand, the future will prove the Revisionists, as
writers of history, were right. There is already too much evidence to
show that the progress of Revisionism is inexorable. Revisionism is
destined for a place in history "as the great intellectual adventure
of the end of the century." (Faurisson, The Adventure of Revisionism,
JHR Vol. XIII, No.5 Sept/Oct 1993)
