On December 17, 1944, during Germany’s last stand at the western front – the so-called “Battle of the Bulge” – 84 American prisoners of war were killed by their German captors, members of the Kampfgruppe Peiper (part of the 1st SS Panzer Division). Was it a war crime, as stated the infamous U.S. War Crimes trials held at Dachau after the war, or merely a tragedy?
