Zündel Arrested in Munich
On March 22, Ernst Zündel,
who had traveled to Germany to help organize an international conference
on The
Leuchter Report, was arrested at the home of
Institute
for Historical Review author Ingrid Weckert. Zuendel, who is currently
appealing his conviction on the obscurantist charge of "spreading false
news" in freedom-loving Canada, was charged with defaming the holocaust
dead by maliciously claiming that many of them are still alive.
During the six days which Zuendel spent in a Munich jail, a German court
was able to convict the German-Canadian publicist in absentia, and fine
him 35,000 marks (c. $20,000). Despite a fanfare of international publicity
accompanying his arrest, the media had little to say of his release.
Zuendel is appealing his conviction and will challenge the basis of
the complaint against him.
