The Consequences

Raed Khalil of Syria won honorable mention in Iran's Holocaust Cartoon Contest with this submission.

This collection is dedicated to the consequences that the Holocaust story has had on contemporary cultural and political issues.  We focus primarily on the impact that the Holocaust has had on American and Israeli politics, especially as it relates to the Palestinian people and the various conflicts in the Middle East.

It is our position that the Jewish people have a right to a homeland just as the Palestinian people do.  Both the Israelis and the Palestinians have a right to live in peace and security.  It is also our position that the Holocaust story has caused Jews to believe that they are engaged in an exaggerated life and death struggle with their "enemies."  It has been one factor in the power-shift toward ultra-nationalism and extreme Zionist fundamentalism both in Israel and the Diaspora. It has also resulted in significant abuses of the Palestinians as well as neighboring populations.

Psychologically, the Holocaust has created unnatural fear and distrust among the Jewish people that has all but eliminated any chance of peaceful cohabitation of the Holy land.  The fires of hate, fueled by an unending stream of Holocaust propaganda, have even reduced the likelihood of the creation of a Palestinian state. Today the Holocaust is being used to justify a "Greater Israel" with expanded borders necessitating both voluntary emigration and compulsory expulsions of the Palestinians.  It is of the greatest irony that one nation's tragedy is being used to justify inflicting a tragedy on another.  It is our belief that only with an accurate and objective understanding of the Jewish Holocaust can peace be secured in this long tortured region.

"Early in the morning of April 9, 1948, commandos of the Irgun (headed by Menachem Begin) and the Stern Gang attacked Deir Yassin, a village with about 400 Palestinian residents. The village lay outside of the area to be assigned by the United Nations to the Jewish State; it had a peaceful reputation. But it was located on high ground in the corridor between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, and according to Plan Dalet, it was to be destroyed and the residents evacuated.
"In all 254 men, women, and children were systematically murdered. Fifty three orphaned children were literally dumped along the wall of the Old City where they were found by Miss Hind Husseini and brought behind the American Colony Hotel to her home which was to become the Dar El-Tifl El-Arabi orphanage.
"Part of the struggle for self determination by Palestinians has been to tell the truth about Palestinians as victims of Zionism. For too long their history has been denied and this denial has only served to further oppress and deliberately dehumanize Palestinians in Israel, inside the occupied territories, and outside in their diaspora. Some progress has been made. Westerners now realize that Palestinians, as a people, do exist. And they have come to acknowledge that during the creation of the state of Israel thousands of Palestinians were killed and over 700,000 were driven or frightened from their homes and lands on which they had lived for centuries."

  20. Washington Report on Middle East Affairs
    * This monthly magazine is a gold-mine of information about events in and around the state of Israel, with emphasis on the influence of Zionist groups and others sympathetic to their cause on the conduct of the government of the United States. Simply put, they describe in detail repeat instances of U.S. foreign-policy decisions whose primary purpose seems to be either to pump more U.S. tax dollars into Israel (or to forgive repayment of the billions already granted and loaned), and whose justifications, if any, are illogical and often false. Also focuses on the brutal treatment of the Palestinian people, and the relentless assaults on their property and human rights. Most articles concern current events, but it continues to feature historical vignettes from the cloudy history of Zionism and Israel. (Click on the picture for a much larger view.)
