Wartime Reactions

Were Germany’s wartime opponents and enemies capable of knowing about the alleged Holocaust when it evolved? And if so, is there any proof that they did know? How did the Vatican, the International Red Cross, the governments of the U.S., of Britain and of Soviet Russia react, and what does that tell us about what they knew – or thought they knew? Questions such as these are addressed in the papers listed in this section.

Already by 1984 Professor Robert Faurisson had noticed that General De Gaulle never pronounced the words “gas chambers” for the simple reason that he did not believe in them[1]; nevertheless it wasn’t until the occasion of the Papon trial that people finally start publicly to question De Gaulle’s …

Since the 1960s, it has been increasingly fashionable to condemn Pius XII (Eugenio Pacelli) – who was Pope from 1939 until 1958 – for his alleged indifference to the fate of Europe’s Jews during the Second World War. Rabbi Marvin Hier of the Simon Wiesenthal Center of Los Angeles, for …

When I was writing The Hoax of the Twentieth Century I encountered an extraordinary source, viz. the multi-volume collection of documents and commentary Actes et documents du Saint Siège relatifs à la seconde guerre mondiale (Acts and documents of the Holy See relative to the Second World War). The series, …

One of the most persistent and malicious accusations leveled against the Roman Catholic Church in recent decades is the charge that Pope Pius XII and the Vatican acquiesced in the slaughter of millions of Jews during the Second World War by failing explicitly to condemn the killings. (On this subject, …

Over the past several years, there has emerged with increasing frequency the charge that because it failed to bomb the Germans’ concentration camps, the United States bears a significant share of the blame for the Holocaust. There are even those who insist that American officials were well aware of Hitler’s …

Two books are very good in exploring the failure of the Allies to act as though there was an "extermination" going on. They are Martin Gilbert's Auschwitz and the Allies and Walter Laqueur's The Terrible Secret. The latter is especially interesting because Laqueur in effect proves that it could not …

The following are what I consider some important points in the behavior of the wartime Pope Pius XII in relation to the Nazi persecutions of the Jews. The rough situation is that, while the Vatican aided Jews, especially Italian Jews, Pius XII was relatively silent about "extermination". My explanation for …

The main reasons for a focus on Vatican behavior during the "Holocaust" are, first, that the major events are supposed to have taken place in Poland, a Catholic country and, second, that the Vatican had a ubiquitous diplomatic corps to keep it well informed. It is true that the Germans …

Mass-murder denials: On at least one occasion, Germany publicly denied any intention to murder concentration camp inmates. An October 12 1944 letter talks of Germany's "press denial" of rumored intentions to murder Birkenau inmates. This letter has never been released to the public by the U.S. government. It is almost …

The Abandonment of the Jews: America and the Holocaust by David S. Wyman. New York: Pantheon Books, 1984, 444pp, Hb, $19.95. Most of the important information assembled in this significant new book has already been presented and evaluated by others, most notably by Bernard Wasserstein, Martin Gilbert and Arthur Morse. …

That the Jewish leaders outside Europe, who were publicly speaking of "extermination", were in contact with the Jews in occupied Europe but failed to inform them of "extermination" can be easily inferred from Yehuda Bauer's American Jewry and the Holocaust. Many more examples of this failure can be cited. A …

Jews are prominent in the present highly visible culture-war assault on the Catholic Church in America, from the quite recent vilification of Pope Pius XII for “not doing enough” to help Jews in World War II to the entertainment industry’s open bias against the Catholic Church and all it stands …

Pope John Paul II is scheduled to visit Israel next week and give an address at the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial in Jerusalem (March 23). There is great tension over this encounter for the following reasons. During World War II the Vatican, with its far flung connections, especially in Poland, …

As most long time list members are aware, we from time to time examine questions relating to World War II. Were the Allies the right side, the wrong side, or was there a correct side ("God's side") in the war. We know that Pius XII specifically rejected the Allied contention …
