On 26 April 1937, at the height of the Spanish civil war, the Basque town Guernica fell victim to a German air raid. Although occurring more than two years prior to the outbreak of WWII, it is an event of major importance with respect to the debate concerning alleged German war crimes during that conflict. One side of the debate claims that this air raid foreshadowed the German armed forces’ new tactics of terrorizing the civilian population with air raids; the other side claims that the events surrounding Guernica have been grossly misrepresented, exaggerated and distorted.
