In an article (reproduced here) in The Gazette of Montreal (Canada), August 5, 1993, and in a memoir, Moshe Peer recounts his wartime ordeal as an eleven-year-old in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. Peer claims that he “was sent to the [Bergen-Belsen camp] gas chamber at least six times.”

In fact, the dead of Bergen-Belsen were, above all, unfortunate victims of war and its turmoil, not deliberate policy. It can even be argued that they were as much victims of Allied as of German measures.

The Germans evacuated Jews away from the deadly bombing raids to Bergen-Belsen. Conditions in Bergen-Belsen were generally good until the final months of the war. This is confirmed by Jewish Virtual Library.

In 1945 a typhus epidemic broke out in Belsen, a convalescent camp for sick workers. The German government arranged a truce, which the allies promptly broke. The allies then exploited the epidemic in their propaganda, stating that Belsen was a “horror” camp.

The real narrative with regard to "the Truth about the Bergen-Belsen 'horror camp'". In part narrated by Dr. Russell Barton, who happened to be in that camp, and by Ernst Zündel. Belsen was a recovery camp for sick conscript labourers.

Holohoax Tales: Singing Saved Me from the Bergen-Belsen Gas Chambers. Moshe Kraus claims singing for Commandant Josef Kramer saved him from death in the gas chambers while at Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp.

With British armored forces only hours away from finishing World War II, Heinrich Himmler ordered approximately 10,000 weak and sick prisoners from the concentration camp Neuengamme and its satellite camps to be transferred to three ships parked in the Bay of Lübeck.

This post is by no means an exhaustive account of propaganda hoaxes by Allied governments relative to World War II. I've chosen to point to a couple examples which are illustrative of a problem of a much wider scale.
