Free Speech + Censorship

The ideal and limits of free speech and expression, and also the free access to information, as well as the various legal and extra-legal attempts at limiting that civil right. Censorship includes not only government actions against any media, published or not, but also the active suppression of such media by mainstream outlets. Unless a report is on free speech and/or censorship in general, it has been categorized in the subcategory of the country discussed.

Some plain talk about the Holocaust and Revisionism

When this newspaper printed Bradley Smith's advertisment last Thursday (“The Holocaust Story,” April 4, page 11), it fanned not one, but two, gathering controversies on campus. The first concerns our knowledge about the Nazi massacre of the Jews of Europe. The second centers on the policies of The Daily itself. Surprisingly perhaps, the first issue…

Warning: Column may be offensive

A lot of complaints to The Daily in the past week have not been about misquotes, errors or bad headlines, amazingly enough. Most regarded a full-page advertisement from Bradley R Smith that ran April 4, advocating open debate and free speech on the Holocaust. Others were about Bill Colwell's perspective Monday, which insisted that importing…

Trivializing the Holocaust?

The ADL trained their sites on another Holocaust outrage, claiming that a proposed New York art exhibit would trivialize the Holocaust. The offender this time is a German artist who planned to set up an exhibit at the Whitney Art Museum in New York featuring a room bedecked with red walls, on which quotes from…

The Academic Year 1999-2000. A Summary

Twenty years ago Smith discovered revisionist theory regarding the Holocaust story. Nineteen years, eleven months and about 28 days ago he discovered that holocaust revisionism was taboo. After a year or two Smith lost interest in following the ins and outs of revisionist scholarship itself, but he remained fascinated with the ferocity with which the…

The Campus Thought Police

“To refuse a hearing to an opinion because they are sure that it is false is to assume that their certainty is the same thing as absolute certainty. All silencing of discussion is an assumption of infallibility.”—John Stuart Mill, On Liberty (1859) “It was naive to believe that the 'light of day' can dispel lies,…

4/3/2000 To Editor, St. Cloud Student Newspaper Open Letter Since the publication of our insert, “The Revisionist” ignited such a controversy on your campus, I would like to take the opportunity to make a few comments clarifying CODOH's objective as well as our reaction to to the campus response. A Tale of Two Ads

On February 3rd the Zionist Organization of America announced that it was mobilizing a number of prominent Jews, including Elie Wiesel, to run full page advertisements in American newspapers condemning the Syrian newspaper which had accused Israel of manipulating the Holocaust for political purposes. The Committee for Open Debate on the Holocaust (CODOH) wishes these…

God Bless the Hillel Rabbis

Dream that I’m shot in the head, then the heart. The hit to the head is accompanied by a tremendous blast of hot air. I see everything blowing apart. The shot to the heart is a little high and to my left. It’s an unnecessary follow up. The dream half wakens me and I lie…

Labels and Libels

An important libel suit is under way in London. David Irving, the controversial British historian of World War II, is suing an American scholar, Deborah Lipstadt of Emory University, for calling him “one of the most dangerous spokespersons for Holocaust denial.” Since she wrote this in a 1993 book Denying The Holocaust, Irving says, his…
