Hans-Jürgen Witzsch was a history teacher at a German elite high school (Gymnasium) in Fürth, Bavaria. He also founded and directed the "Arbeitskreis für Zeitgeschichte und Politik" (Work Group Contemporary History and Politics), in the context of which he conducted numerous research projects on contemporary German history. In 2002 he was the first German professional historian to be sentenced to a prison term (three months) for his historical views. He had expressed revisionist views on the Holocaust in a private letter to a high-profile German-Jewish university history teacher, Prof. Dr. Michael Wolffsohn, who in turn filed a criminal complaint against his teacher colleague. Between 1997 and 2001, a broad media campaign occurred in Germany reporting about the widespread use of so-called forced laborers in Germany during the Third Reich period.
