Why we few criticize Israel

Washington – People sometimes ask me why I'm so critical of Israel, as if I should be devoting more of my attention to Sri Lanka, or perhaps Zaire. But the question is always a little nervous, as it wouldn't be if I were writing equally often about Sri Lanka or Zaire. I could understand this…

Labels and Libels

An important libel suit is under way in London. David Irving, the controversial British historian of World War II, is suing an American scholar, Deborah Lipstadt of Emory University, for calling him “one of the most dangerous spokespersons for Holocaust denial.” Since she wrote this in a 1993 book Denying The Holocaust, Irving says, his…

Musidorus the Cannibal

© January 20, 2000 Joseph Sobran Long ago there was a bitter war between the kingdoms of Scythia and Bohemia. It began when the Scythian king, Lobo the Bold, claimed by ancient right some lands on the Bohemian seacoast, which he invaded, slaughtering the Bohemians who had lived there peacefully for many generations. The Bohemian…

In Our Hands

One isn't supposed to say this, but many people believe that Israel now holds the White House, the Senate, and much of the American media in its hands. This is what is known as an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory. The odd thing is that it is held by many Israelis. In an essay reprinted in the…

The Jewish Establishment

In the early 1930s, Walter Duranty of the New York Times was in Moscow, covering Joe Stalin the way Joe Stalin wanted to be covered. To maintain favor and access, he expressly denied that there was famine in the Ukraine even while millions of Ukrainian Christians were being starved into submission. For his work Duranty…

Free Pollard, our Scapegoat

In the wake of the Gulf War, many American Jews are openly calling for the release of the convicted Israeli spy Jonathan Jay Pollard, who is serving a life sentence in a federal penitentiary in Marion, Ill. Some of the arguments are dubious, but the basic demand is fair. Pollard already has served more than…

Johnson’s conduct toward Israel approached treason

Iraq's attempted theft of krytrons, useful as nuclear triggering devices, is not unique. Four years ago Israel was reported to be obtaining krytrons illegally through a California company. Unlike the Iraqi operation, it wasn't front-page news in most of the country and was barely mentioned by network newscasts. Israel has long since become a nuclear…

Allies: Don't Let Our Soldiers Die!

Yes, says Victor Ostrovsky, a former Israeli secret agent. In a new book, By Way of Deception: A Devastating Insider's Portrait of the Mossad, Mr. Ostrovsky says the Israelis had advance notice of the suicide attack that killed 241 Marines in Beirut in October 1983 but withheld the information from the United States in the…

Let’s represent U.S. interests for once, instead of Israel’s

“Much as we want to coordinate our activities with the United States, the interests (of the United States and Israel) are not identical. We have to, from time to time, worry about our own interests.” That was Yitzhak Shamir speaking in 1981, before he became Israel's prime minister. He spoke as an Israeli official should…
