Orthodoxy Criticized

Critique and counter-critique is one of the hallmarks of a scholarly attitude, so it goes without saying that revisionists are taking their opponents’ arguments and responses seriously. Hence, this section addresses the theses of several orthodox scholars on the Holocaust which have evoked revisionist responses. Although most orthodox scholars insist that revisionist arguments are not even worth looking at, a number of them have in fact breached the taboo and have not only looked at revisionist arguments, but have actually deigned to criticize them in one way or other. The revisionist responses and rebuttals can be found here as well.

  • The Plum Cake

Since the end of World War II a search has continued, and for many has ended with the quarry having eluded its hunters. Some believe what they seek never existed in physical form, but existed nonetheless. It is vitally important that it existed during the war though it has never been located by those chasing…

  • Why Won't Deborah Lipstadt Debate the Holocaust Revisionists?

Holocaust historian and Jewish activist Deborah Lipstadt is a prominent and severe critic of Holocaust revisionism (or to use her terminology, “Holocaust denial”). As a result of the libel case brought before the High Court in London in the winter-spring of 2000 by David Irving against Lipstadt and her publisher, she and her book, Denying…

  • Open Letter to Deborah Lipstadt

Dear Dr. Lipstadt: I have just finished reading D.D. Guttenplan's The Holocaust on Trial. There is one passage in the book that really struck me. On page 209, Guttenplan wrote: “..it was hard not to feel queasy listening to Rampton quiz Irving about his attitude to 'intermarriage between the races'—on behalf of a defendant [Dr….

  • The Trial of O.J. Lipstadt

Everyone is familiar with the fact that a court case has two aspects. On the one hand, there is the case as it is decided in a court of law, on the other hand, there is the case as it is decided in the court of public opinion. Frequently a victory in one venue can…

  • Holocaust Hoax on Trial

Dear PBS, I look forward to your program on October 31 entitled: “Holocaust on Trial.” For me it will be of great interest to see how far PBS goes to distort the overwhelming evidence about Auschwitz, which shows that no one was ever, killed there in gas chambers. That you intend to distort the facts…

  • Denying the Revisionists

In a style reminiscent of the most vile Nazi rhetoric, Deborah Lipstadt writes in the preface to her Denying the Holocaust, “In the 1930s Nazi rats spread a virulent form of antisemitism that resulted in the destruction of millions. Today the bacillus carried by these rats threatens to 'kill' those who already died at the…

  • Holocaust Orthodoxy: The Road Paved with Moral Certainty

Probably the greatest letdown yet for the traditional Holocaust school of thought came during the second week of the Irving vs. Lipstadt libel trial, currently underway in London. While many prominent defenders of the usual story had predicted that Irving would be forced to concede that he was wrong, and that Holocaust Revisionism would be…
