At Auschwitz according to Jerry Weiser, a Jew, the snow was black. He says, in summer, Auschwitz was green, like a country club or a golf course, but in winter, the snow was black, due to the continual smoke from the cremation of the gassed Jews and their ash. The smell was horrible. But somehow he survived due to German inefficiency, but maybe with mental problems, snow being white, crematoria don't smoke, and don't smell either.
