Defamation (Hebrew: השמצה‎; translit. Hashmatsa) is a 2009 documentary film by award-winning filmmaker Yoav Shamir. It examines anti-semitism and, in particular, the way perceptions of antisemitism affect Israeli and U.S. politics. Defamation won Best Documentary Feature Film at the 2009 Asia Pacific Screen Awards. Interesting? Yes, the film is peculiar in the sense, that this examination of "anti-semitism" just ignores the fact that Arabs are also semites. It doesn't really explain why "anti-semitism" exists. Of course the film is totally non-objective, completely subjective. Samir asks what is "Anti-Semitism"? [Jews not Arabs]. Are anti-Semites a dangerous threat? Samir looks to see if its just a Zionist scare tactic. Samir talks to other Jews like Norman Finklestein, the head of the Anti-Defamation League, Israeli school children at Auschwitz, and black teenagers in Brooklyn, and other groups.

    Yoav Shamir (born 1970) is an Israeli documentary filmmaker most noted for the films Checkpoint and Defamation. Yoav Shamir was born in Tel Aviv in 1970. A ninth-generation Israeli from Tel Aviv, he is the son of two elementary school teachers. He graduated from Tel Aviv University with a BA in History and philosophy. He obtained a MFA in cinema with honours. He served as an Israeli soldier in the Israeli-occupied territories.
